The Nature of Something

Agan Harahap presents works in 'The Nature of Something', a photography exhibition curated by Angki Pu and Kamil.

'The Maestro's Eyes' series is a visual experiment that invites us to view art history in reverse. If the invention of the camera in the past freed painters from the demand to record reality exactly as it was and encouraged the birth of expressive freedom in modern art, then this work seems to playfully with time. By utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) technology as a "fictional camera," the brushstrokes and physical distortions of classic Indonesian paintings are forcefully reverted into highly realistic photographic forms. To add another layer of friction to the work, these cutting- edge digital fabrications are then returned to a physical state, manually printed using the screenprint technique on paper.

Furthermore, this approach playfully engages with the concept of "Jiwa Ketok" (Visible Soul) coined by S. Sudjojono, a belief that art must honestly capture the soul and deepest realities of its society. It becomes a deliberate irony when the visual honesty of the original paintings is re- recorded using AI, a machine inherently designed to create illusions.

Ultimately, this series offers a new perspective on the value of truth in photography in today's AI era, where fiction and reality have completely merged. We no longer care about the reality within a photograph, but rather how that memory is reconstructed. This work instead offers an alternative historical archive that disrupts our collective memory, forcing us to look at the past through the lens of a present filled with endless possibilities.
